Other Stuff

A Marvel boss decided to make diversity the scapegoat for falling sales this week.

By diversity, they mean giving characters from marginalised groups - people of colour (PoC,) LGBTQ+ people, etc. - as well as women and girls in general, their own titles.

Here's just a few of the reasons that blaming falling sales on diversity is stupid as all hell:

  • If you count heroines in general as diversity, you need to go take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. Do better.

  • The only people that diversity alienates are people that you maybe shouldn't be pandering to #JustSaying (For example, Nazi website Breitbart has already posted a bigoted article on the subject.)

  • Marvel runs too many series concurrently; there's too much choice for too small a fanbase (for individual issues at least) - and the fans can't afford to buy every issue Marvel is putting out, particularly with all the reboots and events. #TrueStory

And that's this week's comics wrap-up! If you liked it, I'd love it if you shared and commented!

  1. So from what I understand, they're blaming diversity on their failing sales? Meanwhile in this most recent awards season we saw more than ever that diversity sells. It's not liked Hidden Figures broke a number of box office records or anything. When will these corporations realize that if we're asking for diversity, then we'll probably put our money into diversity?

    1. Yep, that's what they're doing. Of course the misogynistic and bigoted part of the comics community is thrilled. *sighs*

And yeah... strange that. It's almost like people ask for what they actually want!

  2. Ah, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 looks so good! I AM GROOT! I'm excited. Ah, diversity. Look at the two new Star Wars movies, people of color kicking butt, and the movies were great hits.

  3. Boy, those remarks from Marvel made me furious. I'm glad so many smart people out there are thinking and writing about all the reasons Marvel's full of shit.
