2017's Top 4 Books (...In The Opinion of Yours Truly)

2017 can't be well and truly dusted off and put back on the shelf* without some input from your favourite Bookish Rebel (moi, ofc,) on the bestest books of the year.

two people with capes and flags acting very victory-ish

This is TOTALLY MY OPINION ONLY.

Obviously, I can only pick from books I've read. And within that only books published in 2017.

Even given those rules, there's a bunch of books that I've read that I didn't include - THAT DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T LIKE THEM!!!!

This is basically a snapshot of the stand-outs. There were loooooads of other books I could've included - promise!

(My Anxiety kicks in when I think I might be leaving someone/something out that deserves recognition - does it show?!)

*Ha, shelf? Books? Hehe! XD

The Book of the Year:

The Hate U Give (THUG) by Angie Thomas

This is THE book of 2017. I don't think many people will argue with me.

This Young Adult debut from amazing author Angie Thomas shines a light on police brutality against black people in the USA from an #ownvoices perspective.

It's also exceptionally well-written, and worth all of the hype.

Warning though: there's a lot of racism in this, including the murder of a black teenage boy by the police. There's a lot of potentially distressing stuff going on here, so be careful. Self-care wins, my nerdlets.

The Best Graphic Novel:

The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill

The cuteness, the diversity, the AMAZING artwork... this book is beautiful and awesomeness incarnate.

And there are cute tea dragons; I mean, what more could you want?

The Hidden Gem:

Mirror Mirror by Cara Delevingne and Rowan Coleman

I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been a little more hype about this one around the bookish parts of the interweb.

I mean, CARA DELEVINGNE WROTE A BOOK - and it's actually pretty damned good.

This one was surprisingly complex and compelling - and I actually really loved it.

The Best New Adult Novel:

Something Beautiful by Amanda Gernentz Hanson

In no way did I cry reading this. Nope. I didn't. It was gravity 'cos I was reading upside-down - and you can't prove otherwise!

Look, basically this meant a lot to me: not only was there specific sexually fluid representation, there was also depression rep.

Not only that, but the writing rocked... it was a beautiful book, m'k?

So those were my best books of 2017, what are yours? XD

  1. Totally agree with you on THUG. I’m actually going to talk about it in my sociology seminar today because we’re talking about race and white privilege and I’m pretty nervous I’m just going to obsessively gush the entire time lol.

  2. I don’t normally read new releases, but I did read THUG last year. I really liked it.

  3. Agreeing with the rest of the comments here, I really loved THUG! It was also my top 2017 read and I'm so glad I picked it up. I'd been in a reading slump for a while, but I finished that book the night I started it. Thanks for sharing this wonderful list!

    1. I know - I only realised after writing this post that I picked all diverse books! (Def. disproves the 'diverse books aren't as good' myth!)

      Thanks :)

  5. You've sold me on these. I remember reading most of the reviews and saying I'd get the Tea Dragon for my daughter. I think I'm going to splurge and buy all of these. Is that extravagant? I'll only forget otherwise.

    1. There's no such thing as extravagant when it comes to books ;) if you've got the money, then why not?

I hope you enjoy them - and I hope your daughter enjoys The Tea Dragon Society. (It's. So. Cute!!!) XD
