Nerd Church - Save the World

With the world the way it is (*looks out at trash fire and sighs*) the major issue our planet is facing is in danger of being pushed to the side-lines.

But we need to focus on climate change.

Because, contrary to what the loud handful of naysayers say, we are wrecking the planet.

The planet is warming - and we can see from last year (2018's fires, heatwaves, and other extreme weather,) the effect this is having.

This warming is due to our actions. We are emitting dangerous levels of greenhouse gases, especially CO2 (Carbon Dioxide.)

Carbon Dioxide is produced when we burn fossil fuels - coal, oil, gas, etc. - which we do to create electricity, warm our homes, power our transport, and stuff like that.

There are clean alternatives - solar, wind, tidal power - though some of the alternatives that governments put forward (imho, because they're easier,) such as nuclear and wood chip come with their own problems.

And governments need to step up.

Because while we need to keep doing out individual parts - collectives of individuals can help save the world dammit! - if legislation and investment aren't put in place to move power, transport, industry, and agriculture towards fewer emissions, the big impacts we need aren't going to happen.

To that end, I agree with the message of the various kids' strikes around the world.

...Not so sure about the method. Sorry, dearest nerdlets, but I promised I'd never lie to you.

I personally think that skipping school is a fast way to get your views dismissed as childish.

I really, really, hope that I'm wrong and that the governments of the world listen to you, but I'm not holding my breath.

It IS possible for governments to take climate change seriously.

The devolved Welsh Government has a commitment to cut emissions by 80% by 2050, and strict targets to achieve this.

We also have Towards Zero Waste - a specific Welsh government strategy to allow us to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2050. We're currently ahead of target.

We already recycle more than 60% of our waste, and have one of the highest recycling rates in the world.

We are a poor country of around 3 million people - if we can do this, anyone can.

(And if the UK government had agreed to fund the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, we'd also be leading the way in clean energy. #JustSaying.)

But while other governments think they can do the minimum, nothing will change.

And we can't let our last chance at change slip away. We won't.

We can do this, dearest nerdlets! We can save the world.

  1. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK, CEE! Climate change is the number one cause I fight for daily, and it scares me how people don’t take it seriously. Simple changes can be made, like using reusable bags at the grocery store instead of plastic ones! It’s not as hard as people think!

    1. We have a tax for single-use plastic bags here - it's now UK-wide, but the other nations brought it in waaay before England.

If my little post-industrial country can fight for the environment, then so can everyone else's!

AND THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK WILL HEAR ME I PROMISE!!!! ;)
