'...it was possible that they hadn’t thought through all of the consequences of Loki joining the team. They certainly hadn’t anticipated this one.'

Friday Fics Fix - The Fifth Beatle of the Family
'Klaus blinks into the mug in his hands, shaking and in danger of spilling. The book sits between them on the couch, her own face looking up at her, searching, accusing.'
One of the many interesting thing about Netflix series The Umbrella Academy
is the knowledge that this team of superheroes - these
children - were famous as kids.
Fame is something that has to be handled very delicately when it comes to
children - as the self-destructive tendencies, and generally poor mental
health, of many former child-stars, shows.

Friday Fics Fix - A Shot of Venom

'Venom crashed through the window and leapt out of the building, leaving Dan to wonder how the hell he was going to explain this to maintenance, or to Anne.'
I love Venom - let's get some Venom!
...I mean the film and/or comic-book character.
Not, like, poison. Because
that would be bad.
Not, like, hatred, either.
In summary: the Marvel alien symbiote, rather than any other usage of the word
venom. 😅

'It was a long distance between knowing that all reds equals bad, and what the information actually said. Alex shook her head and started shouting commands, and Nia felt her heart lodge in her throat. '
I love Brainiac 5 and Dreamer. They belong together dammit!
In case you have no idea who I'm talking about -
In CW's Supergirl TV show, Brainiac 5, aka Brainy, aka Querl Dox, is a cyborg
alien from the future,
...and Dreamer, aka Nia Nal, is the Transgender daughter of a human and an
alien who can harnass the power of dream energy to see the future (and also
smack people with the dream energy, which is handy.)

Month In Review(s) - June 2020
June 2020. Somehow we're only half-way through 2020... which is...
interesting.
We're still more-or-less on Lockdown here in Wales, though we're slowly easing
things - so as of 6th July, we formed a social bubble with my brother, which
meant we could hug him and everything.
Anyways, I had an OK month, although I did have a migraine, and hayfever, and
a few bad Depression days... but I'm still here, still standing, still writing
slightly rambley blogposts! 😊
Speaking of my blogposts - I once again posted zero reviews this month, and
had one of my regular existential crises re: this blog.
(Not to be confused with my regular existential crises re: writing,
Queerness, productivity, the meaning of life, etc. etc. etc.)
The typical, really: does my blog have enough bookish content? Can I even call
it a book blog? Am I somehow misleading people by posting about other topics
on here?

Friday Fics Fix - A Blanket Cocoon
'Dave was probably never going to get answers out of Klaus, but for right now, he was the designated ‘Coax Hargreeves out for Meals’ guy, so he was going to do his job.'
Part of that is because I am an emo child to the end of eternity, and the
gothicky and/or angsty stuff is always going to appeal to my sense of Drama.
But another part is that actually it's emotionally healthy to give yourself
some space to explore your darker and more angsty feelings in a safe
environment - such as through media.
(...I don't know whether that last sentence was really smart or really
b*llsh**, but I'ma go with it!
And this is where I remind you that
I'm not a mental health professional! Just a chick with personal
experience of Depression and Anxiety.)

Friday Fics Fix - Pride Fics Fest: The Love They Never Allowed On Screen (Steve x Bucky)
It's the last week of Pride Fics Fest!
I hope you've enjoyed the posts that I've done this month - I've really
enjoyed writing them!
It's nice, now and then, to mix-up and refresh a series of posts (Friday Fics
Fix) which I've been writing for over 4 years now - I hope you liked it too,
dearest nerdlets!
I'm sure a lot of my fanfiction posts will still be based around LGBTQ+
characters and contents going forward - partly because it's me, and partly
because it's fanfiction 😉
This week's post is celebrating my OTP, Stucky - the greatest love story
Marvel and Disney ever thwarted.
(Fangirling notes:
OTP = 'One True Pairing' - the couple you believe were destined to be
together, and you will fight for 'til your (hopefully metaphorical) dying
breath!
Stucky - a relationship between Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, and
Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier)

Friday Fics Fix - Pride Fics Fest: Fics With Trans+ Characters
It's another Friday in June my dearest nerdlets, which means that it's
another instalment in my Pride Fics Fest - and this time we're gonna look at
fics with Trans+ main characters.
Fanfiction is here to support our Trans and Non-Binary siblings!
Fanfiction can be a place where Trans+/NB+ people can find the kind of
representation that is largely not present in mainstream media.

crime,
DC,

Friday Fics Fix - Pride Fics Fest: Queer Canon!
Welcome back to Pride Fics Fest dearest nerdlets!
This week we're gonna look at those oh-so-amazing canonically Queer
characters and relationships, and fanfiction that celebrates that.
For those who don't know, canon is the official stuff that's actually
in the book or TV series or film or whatever, explicitly...
...as opposed to stuff where you have to
scramble around in the sub-text, or stuff which fandom picks up and Queers all on its lonesome ;)
Let's start with the horror masterpiece I will never shut up about: 2009's
unapologetically Queer Megan Fox film, Jennifer's Body.
In 2009, there was a girl named Jennifer Check,
and in 2019 I rec'd
Big Red
by spheeris1 - a fic that is essentially a love letter to this
under-appreciated film.
(Seriously, I'm never gonna shut up about this film! I love it so much!)

Friday Fics Fix - Pride Fics Fest: Bringing Subtext Into The Spotlight
June is Pride Month dearest nerdlets!
So, since a lot of events have been cancelled this year (*whispers* I've never actually been to an event and that's OK! There's no
checklist for Queer validation!)
and fanfiction is, generally, Queer af, I figured I'd have my own li'l
Pride Fics Fest!
This week, I'm looking at fics which take that Queer subtext (which ranges from slipping under the radar to just plain Queerbaiting,)
and bring it to the forefront!
Because fanfiction, as mentioned, is hella Gay!
So, I've been mining my extensive fanfiction-related blogpost archive, to
bring attention to the fics which bring attention to the subtext! :)

Month in Review(s) - May 2020
(Warning: this post discusses the Coronavirus/Covid 19, and references the death
of George Floyd)
May 2020... who wrote this film?!
Obviously, globally, May was a dumpster fire.
(And Black Lives Matter. George Floyd deserves justice. If you disagree, you
can eff off.)

Friday Fics Fix - Wholesome Hargreeves Family Bonding!
'“We’re having a game night. A family game night. Because that’s what families do.”
“It is?” Vanya asked.
“Since when?” Five said at almost exactly the same time.'
I can't stay away from The Umbrella Academy for long - and neither do I
want to!
There's a popular meme in the fandom of a family games night.
...That's because the idea of
these dysfunctional and emotionally-stunted superheroes attempting to play Monopoly
is...
...Well, amazing. Tbh.

Friday Fics Fix - Drarry In An Elevator
They stand in another stretch of silence before a great screeching sound reverberates throughout the elevator.
For reasons best known to yourselves, dearest nerdlets, one of my
perenially popular posts - especially with Google searches -
is Drarry In A Cupboard.
So, if you're a fan of Drarry in a cupboard, then I have a treat for you today
- Drarry in an elevator!
(Anybody else mentally singing Aerosmith's 'Love In An Elevator'? Just me.
Ok.)
(Fangirling notes: Drarry is Draco and Harry with a romantical and/or
sexy-ness relationship.)
Friday 15 May 2020
Friday Fics Fix - The Fear of Jonathan Crane
(Warning: this post references child abuse and systemic child protection
failings.)
'Jonathan held up his hands, retreating into his hood. Hide your face. It’s a monster.'
One of the most compelling and mature superhero shows of recent years is
Gotham.
It's also one of the most under-rated, because people suck, and haters gonna
hate.
(Luckily, those of us who love this show know how goddamn awesome
it is!)
Gotham is a Batman-prequel, showing the lives of many of the villains, and a
few of the heroes, in the years between the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne,
and the time baby Bruce put on the Batman cowl.
It shows bad people doing good things, and good people doing bad things.
Because life - especially in Gotham - is problematic and messy.

Month In Review(s) - April 2020
(Warning: this post discusses Covid 19/Coronavirus, and Anxiety)
Um... yeah...
(I know it's the 13th of May - I'm disorganised, and you all know this.)
OK, plus side: I had fewer panic attacks this month!
I mean, I still had panic attacks, and a butt-tonne of Anxiety, but I had slightly less of it! Woo!
(Small victories, dearest nerdlets, small victories.)
Friday 8 May 2020
Friday Fics Fix - A Star Wars Trio
I know Star Wars day was technically Monday (for those who are less fluent in nerd - 'May the Fourth be with you' is a pun that's taken on a life of its own,) but I figured now was a good time to take another look at some Star Wars fics!
Oh, and just assume that everything in this post has SPOILERS up to and including The Last Jedi.
(No, I haven't seen The Rise of Skywalker yet, so there won't be spoilers for that - but everything else is fair game.)
(Side-note: I'm still getting used to the new Blogger (the platform I use,) interface, so apologies if things look a bit strange!)
Friday 1 May 2020
Friday Fics Fix - Witches Loving Witches
'Ginny started to laugh. The Death Eater stopped walking. He was speaking angrily now, growling or snarling something.'
Argh, how do I explain this week's fic?!?!
Well, for a start, it turns out good F/F fics are like buses - nothing for ages, then they come along one after the other.
Friday 24 April 2020
Friday Fics Fix - Some Happy Super-Sapphics For #LesbianVisibilityWeek
'“Nobody’s going to bother you if you’re sitting with us,” she promised. “I mean, they’ll probably say plenty, but Alex has this look that I swear could kill a man.”'
This week marks the first Lesbian Visibility Week an awesomely inclusive campaign to celebrate and support Queer people who ID as Lesbian, and Queer women in general.
So I figured fanfiction is Gay af, but also has some work to do when it comes to Queer girls (male Queer people and relationships tend to be written about more.)
So what better than to rec a fic this week which celebrates Lesbians and Queer girls?
Friday 17 April 2020
Friday Fics Fix - The Self-Care Fanfic Rec-List
Fanfiction is a fab form of self-care (which I know I've said more than once, but that's because it's true!)
And seeing as how:
a) we could all do with all the self-care we can get atm...
and b) I have written a lot of fanfiction posts over the years...
I figured I'd take a look over my blog archives, and select some of the most useful fics for self-care.
(Side-note: looking through my archive is super-weird!)
Friday 10 April 2020
Friday Fics Fix - Three Hearts
'“Hey, He-Who-Lurks-Creepily-in-Corners,” Tony said. “You want a smoothie? You need to replace all the stuff you lost earlier.”'
Amongst the shippers of the MCU, there are many ships on which to sail.
(Yes, I'm talking Avengers again - I know, I've kind of been alternating between Avengers and Umbrella Academy lately, but they're the fics I've found that are worth recc'ing *shrugs* what's a nerdgirl to do?)
