Nerd Church - Embrace Procrastination (Ft. #Science)

I'm procrastinating right now.

There are about five different things that I need to do at the moment. And I'm not doing any of them.

Instead of sorting out various work stuff, or writing the Friday Fics Fix post that I (hopefully) posted last Friday, I'm writing this.

Because procrastination can be productive. You can get more done by doing less.

In fact, it can help you juggle the 1.5 million things you have to do on any given day.

And you get to keep that seductive sense of skiving that comes with avoiding responsibility 😉

Little word of warning though my nerdlets: this works for me, but it won't necessarily work for everyone.

So, y'know, use your discretion and all that jazz.

Plus, maybe don't procrastinate in an emergency situation... Scratch that. DEFINITELY don't procrastinate in an emergency - sort that sh** out!

And I'm not a scientist or any sort of fancy expert - I'm a blogger, k? K.

Hooman beans are fantabulous and largely mythical creatures.

As such their brains work in weird and wonderful ways.

As a hooman bean yourself*, no doubt you've noticed this.

*(Unless you're a Fair One or a cat. In which case, congrats on learning English and figuring out computers!)

As such, if you give yourself time to procrastinate, you can use that time to achieve other things on your 'to-do' list.

Perhaps your evil cupcake-related goals, or whatever else you might have going on.

(Like adulting. But adulting is boring. Boo, hiss, etc.)

And, as a bonus, your brain will keep working on the other stuff.

Yes, you read that correctly: YOUR BRAIN WILL KEEP WORKING ON OTHER STUFF WHILE YOU'RE PROCRASTINATING.

Weird, I know.

But it makes sense when you think about it.

When we were less evolved - either socially or biologically, pick your poison - we had to be able to focus on one thing while not losing sight of our other problems.

So we developed bad-a** subconscious thinking power.

And that bad-a** power can keep working even while we're totally relaxing.

As a bonus to our bonus, the whole 'relax and do something you enjoy' also helps us to process info. we've been taking in.

Which in turn allows us to work stuff out better when we're actually focussing on it.

Breaks are good for our brains. #Science.

Of course, this isn't fool-proof.

You can't leave ALL of the decisions and problem-solving to your subconscious (dammit!)

But if you're having trouble on a task, or have no idea where to start with it, deciding to go back to it later is a good move (time permitting, ofc.)

So, my darling nerdlets, what have we learned?

  • You can avoid doing something you need to do by doing something else you need to do.
    • Just don't avoid things too much. #ResponsibleAdvice

  • Procrastination is not the enemy. (Adulting is 😉 - just kidding. #NoReallyI'mKidding #StillResponsible)

  • Breaks are good for us in a variety of ways.

  • You can get more stuff done by doing less.

  1. I don’t procrastinate when it comes to school work, for some reason I am fully able to get down to business right when an assignment is given to me. However that is not the same when it comes to blog posts! I procrastinate all the time when it comes to putting up posts, and I end up trying to fight it as best as I can.

  2. VERY ACCURATE! I procrastinate doing my homework by reading and blogging--which is also something I really want to do! And when I don't want to do any of those, I choose to sleep--which is also something VERY important for the human body, yes? :>

  3. Ah yes, subconscious thinking power. That was my study secret. Well, not really a secret, but no one else really seemed interested in my study methods, so their loss! (I am being serious, btw. I used to read over notes before going to sleep and instead of doing all-nighters if I procrastinated, I would study, then nap, study, then nap, because of how your brain keeps processing the info while you sleep.) But yes, sometimes procrastination can be a good thing, and it can also reduce your stress to take a break from things which is good too :-)

  4. Oooh! This is good news for people like me who procrastinate ALL the time. I'm going to just always say my subconscious is working on it. :-)

  5. I cannot procrastinate, haha. It drives me bananas when something is left unfinished. It's why I've started listening to more audiobooks... I can listen to them and do housework (and other stuff) at the same time! It's helped with getting through the books on my TBR.

    1. Fair enough! I can leave things unfinished, but I don't like spending too much time doing *nothing*, which is why I use that time to get other sh** done!
