Another week of 'Other Stuff' - though hopefully uber-interesting 'Other Stuff' - once again, blame Loki!

Other Stuff

There's an Honest Trailer for Deadpool 2! ...Well, sort of.

Basically, they smash the f**k outta the fourth wall.

Like, there is NONE of that wall left. It's GONE.

And it features Ryan Reynolds himself as Deadpool!

Enjoy!

(Warning: flashing images, SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War, mild SPOILERS for Deadpool 2, mild adult humour)

dividing line

I haven't commented yet on the decision to cast Ruby Rose as the Arrowverse's* new Batwoman.

I've been delaying talking about it because it's taken me a while to gather enough information for me to be happy talking about wtf is going on.

Literally all I knew about Ruby Rose was that she's a Queer actress who has supported Sexual Fluidity in the past when some people claimed that Fluidity was lesbophobic. (It's not.)

So, I was like - I'd better find out what the problem is before I stick my metaphorical oar in and talk about sh** I don't know a thing about

*CW TV shows based around DC superheroes.

Now that I've looked into it, I can talk about it a little more:

On the argument that Ruby Rose is 'not lesbian enough' - that's sh**. Simple as.

Ruby Rose is a lesbian.

Yes, she's a gender-fluid lesbian. But she's a lesbian.

The same narrow-minded bigots within the Queer community who exclude Transgender people and Sexually Fluid folks are the ones who are claiming Rose isn't Queer enough.

What's even more irritating is that straight (allocishet) actors and actresses have much less criticism when they play Queer characters - yet somehow a Lesbian playing a Lesbian is 'not Queer enough.'

F**k you, haters.

The argument that the part should have gone to a Jewish actress has more merit.

I haven't found any #OwnVoices articles or blogposts on this that explain the affects of this - if you know of any, let me know - but the foundation of the argument for #OwnVoices casting is pretty simple:

People who play the part of marginalised characters need to understand that community, and marginalised people who often struggle to find parts due to discrimination should be given the opportunity of filling those roles.

The strangest thing about all this is that I have no idea what Ruby Rose is like as actress.

I've never seen her act in anything.

Although, I've read that she's not that good. I have no idea whether or not that's true!

Regardless, the homophobia/Queerphobia - most of it sadly from within the LGBTQ+ community - that hounded her off Twitter is not ok.

dividing line

And to finish us off this week, we have a li'l vid from Ryan George - the dude who does Pitch Meetings over at Screen Junkies - about the struggles of being a motivational speaker in the world in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based!

It made me laugh a lot!

Mild Avengers: Infinity War SPOILERS ahead.

  1. I think Ruby Rose is very pretty, I mean, I love her haircut, but like you, I don’t know much about her to judge her acting abilities. I think she made worldwide success in Orange is the New Black, but I don’t watch the show.
