Nerd Church - Exam Results Advice (That's Also Pretty Good Advice For Life)

You want some advice for getting your exam results that also applies to many, many, other sections of life? Of course you do!

(Well, you do now. #JustGoWithIt. #EnjoyTheRide.)

stack of open books with pencils as bookmarks

So, to catch you up my nerdlets, the A-level results came out last Thursday, and there are GCSE results out next Thursday.

(These are the main exams that teenagers take in England and Wales... and maybe Northern Ireland, I've always been a bit unclear on that...)

Wherever you are the world, at some point you're likely to get, or to have already gotten, school exam results. Or the results of interviews, auditions, whatever.

I wrote a little Twitter thread about exam results etc., on Thursday, and figured I'd expand on it here.

Because why not?

Wait, don't answer that.

If you got the results that you want then that's awesome!

Well done!

I hope you have fun with your next step, but please remember to do what YOU want, not what everyone else does.

It's so easy to go down a path just because it's what you 'should' do - and there's def. something to say for financial/social stability, but if your heart lies somewhere else? Don't give up on your dreams.

You might be able to go for it now, you might be able to keep it as a hobby and build it up from there, but if something is you, through and through, that don't abandon it completely just 'cos you feel like you should.

Also, realise that the world will throw you curve-balls. Repeatedly. (And, if you're me, it will throw them with pinpoint accuracy and you'll end up on your butt a lot.)

The important thing is this: it's OK.

Plans can change. Nothing is set in stone, because the world isn't set in stone.

The world is a beautiful, wonderful, infuriating, ball of twisting and turning paths and threads. Sometimes you gotta bend so you don't break - but that's ok. You can do this.

I know this because I got great grades and a university place after my A-levels... and ended up not going to university because of health problems.

After everything I've been through in my life since then, I still find that period one of the most difficult to talk about, not least because I have trouble remembering a lot of it.

But I'm OK. I'm still standing.

It takes time sometimes. And it hurts sometimes. But even if you don't think so, I PROMISE you that you are oh-so-strong.

And if your heart changes? If you find something else you wanna do?

Don't give up on your dreams, my darling nerdlets. Where there's life there's hope.

If you didn't get the grade that you want, it's ok. I promise.

I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but it's not the end of the world.

Unfortunately you're just getting a head-start on those curve-balls I mentioned, y'know, the ones life likes throwing?

Everyone gets knocked down at some point, you're just getting some practice in early. It's OK. You're strong enough for this, I promise.

There are ways of making it to uni, if that's what you want, or starting on a career path, an apprenticeship, an internship, Open University-style courses, local college courses, re-sitting exams, starting a business...

There are options out there. I promise. Probably even some great ones you haven't thought of yet.

And the same to you as to the ones who got the grades they wanted: don't give up on your dreams, and know that this world is not set in stone.

To people who don't know what step to take next, please know that it's OK.

Lemme tell you a secret - NO-ONE has it figured out. True story.

Every adult in the history of adulting is basically just making it up as they go along.

As millennials, my generation have given up on pretending we know wtf we're doing, for the most part.

If a millennial knows what they're doing, they're probably faking it. Just saying.

(Lol, ofc it's possible that such people exist... I've never seen a unicorn, but we all know they're out there!)

Think about what you want, what you need, what's right FOR YOU.

And remember what I've been telling everyone: nothing is set in stone.

Plans change, dreams change, life changes. And that's part of the fun of it.

For those who are struggling with these things, or with anything else:

If you're in the UK, you can talk about ANYTHING with the Samaritans.

Don't be too scared to use them, if you need to talk, you need to talk.

They don't judge, and you don't need to be desperate to call, although if you are they are totally there for you.

Basically, dearest nerdlets, you never know what life's gonna bring - but I promise you can do this, cos you're f**king awesome!

  1. In Canada it’s a little different, we get our exam results almost right after we did the exam. I did great for it being my first year of uni, but my family and I were talking the other day and I did have some reservations about my program. I’m not sure if I will be changing my path any time soon, but it is something I think about a lot.

  2. This is such a thoughtful post. It's taken my until my 40s to work oit what I want to do and to be able to do it. Stepping away from expectations is scary, but so great :-)

  3. This is some great advice and I do hope people take note of it. I had an interesting experience with my exam results I will never forget and I learned that life does give you curveballs but in the end, hopefully everything will work out the way it should. And never give up on your dreams and passions, because you can get there :) Just maybe not in the way you expect sometimes...
