12 Things They Don't Tell You When You Become a Book Blogger

There's stuff no-one warns you about when you become a book blogger.

So I thought I'd do you all a favour and write a 100%* accurate post on the struggles of book-blogging!

*Well - somewhere between 70% & 95% anyway!

1. There is no escape.

(Trapped in a web of your own making!)

2. In a book shop/library, you will become the b**chy version of book Santa Claus (that author was nice to me... that one acted like a cry-baby when I criticised them... nice... nice... naughty...)

(Why yes, yes it does)

3. You will actually dream about blogging.

(This cat is clearly typing blogposts in its sleep #fightme.)

4. You will look back at previous book reviews/posts/blog decisions and cringe.

(#accurateface)

5. Your friends will live in places you will never be able to afford to visit (and if you could, you would probably melt from the heat.) You might never meet some of your closest friends face to face.

(*sniffles*)

6. You will have delayed discussions with your friends because they're asleep while you're awake, and vice-versa.

(If you listen to my family, they'll say this is how I type. It's not. I just like the keys to make a sufficiently clickity-clack noise dammit! #DealWithIt)

7. US copies of physical books smell and feel different to UK copies. All those people who've been bonding over book-smell? THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT SMELLS!

(Whose mind is not blown right now?)

8. You will be disappointed when your faves act problematic.

(Says it all, really.)

9. People will say that books/writing/art isn't political - ignoring the history of everything. Ever.

(Dammit people!)

10. People get scary over the smallest of details. Sometimes it's easier to back away from the angry rants about ships/book covers/what colour someone's hair is.

(Legit how I feel on the interwebs half the time.)

11. Your brain will write blogposts/reviews when you're trying to concentrate on day-to-day life/sleeping.

(I NEED MY SLEEP FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S SAFETY!!!!)

12. No matter how hard you work, there's always a mistake in your blogpost somewhere!

(#fml)

Didja like this post? Huh? Why don't you be a darling, and buy me a cuppa? ;)

  1. 2, 4, and 11, yes! And if you're worried about melting from heat, you should probably not visit me lol. But whaaa? Books smell different in different countries? That's too funny that everyone's been bonding over something different, haha.

    1. I have a couple of US-printed copies of things - and they use a different mix of paper there (I think there's less recycled material in it) and it smells soooo different!!!!!! I was like, we're all living a lie! Lol.

  3. Oh my goodness these are so true! And you start planning your reading around release dates/tours rather than what you actually want to read!

    1. Ha, I do a lot less of that now, because my review back-log is huge! So I'm like: I don't care what order they go out in, as long as they're done! Lol.

  4. I've already started cringing and my blog isn't even a half year old. How did you find out that books smell differently?

    1. Ha, expect the cringe factor to increase exponentially.

And I have a few US paperbacks that I've bought online & they're really different! Not just the smell - the texture of the paper & everything!

  5. This is so accurate!!! Especially #12, the amount of times I've gone back on a post I've published to see a typo, and then just quickly fixing it and hoping nobody noticed!

    1. Ha, there is *always* a mistake in there somewhere!!!! XD

  6. Love this, especially about the book smell. I've just sniffed a US-printed proof of my book and you're right! Another great thing about blogging is we're learning all the time...

  7. oh I love this post. right on! I'm still a newbie so I guess I haven't gotten to be the book shop/library's bitchy Santa yet :) I especially love that all my blogger friends are so diverse and scattered around the globe :)

    1. Ha, I'm sure you'll reach b***hy Santa status soon enough! (And I didn't you were a newbie! Clearly you're awesome already!)

  8. There is no escape cracked me up, I think you dream of blogging regardless of topics, there has been times I have woken up with a good idea, and then cursed myself because my little girl is actually asleep and im awake ! #RVHT

  9. OH YES. There is always a mistake in there somewhere. And even though I'm not for deleting my old posts, I never read them. They make me cringe so much. I totally relate to the book smells being different. And also the sizes! I used to have equal shelves but now US copies are taller than UK copies and it's all a jumble lol.

  10. hahaha!!! theese are so true! Number 4 especially for me and of course for me the typo one, my friends actually call me the typo queen! Also about being broke because as soon as you get paid, YOU BUYS BOOKS!

    1. Ha - yeah... I buy books when I can, but I'm always pretty broke anyway, so thank God for libraries and freebies! XD

      (Damn those pesky typos!)

  11. So, so true... I've also come to the point where I have such a long list of reviews due that I'm randomly reading them, unless somebody reminds me I promised to review one by such and such date. Typos... impossible. The worst is when you've checked everything and then see on a Tweet that the is a typo in the title...

    1. I have an epic review backlog! The thing for me is actually getting down to writing the reviews - I still haven't adapted to writing less posts (last year I posted every day, but then my workload at the day job picked up, so I had to drop down to 4-5 posts per week.)

      Thanks for the comment :)
