Nerd Church - Please, Shut Up About the Royals

I'm British. But I don't care about the royal family. I don't care about the royal baby. I don't care about Harry marrying Meghan.

What I do care about is that I keep having to hear about them all.

Social and mainstream media are both fawning over all things royal and... *sighs* I don't mind like one news-in-brief report or whatever guys, but everyone seems to have freaking lost it, tbh.

And yes, it's great that Charlotte won't be replaced in the succession by her little brother.

But that's just basic levels of decency, to be honest. Equality that should always have been there.

The fact that we even still have a line of succession is f**king awful.

Look, before I go on I should probably explain that where I'm coming from here is very much based on my background: as most of you know by now, I'm Welsh.

  • Wales - especially South Wales where I'm from - has a long history of Socialism.

In case you have any misconceptions, Socialism is not the same as Communism, Communism is a type of Socialism. We kinda have a history of both. 😅

I have literally met more people on the far-left - Marxists, Socialist Worker Party Members, Trade Unionists, and actual Communists, than I have Conservative Party Members.

Come to think of it... I don't think I've met any Conservatives... huh. Certainly none who would admit to it!

Wales was also the first place to raise the red flag as the symbol of a worker's revolt. It was literally soaked in blood, because we have a flare for the dramatic.

That's not to say I've never met people who support the British royal family: plenty of people do.

My grandmother actually does - but then, she's half-English with a magpie-tendency towards royal memorabilia. 😅

Why don't I, personally, support the royals?

Well, unlike some people I've met, I have zero ill-will towards them. I just don't give an ever-loving sh**.

They're a symbol of the conquer-and-oppress history of English and British governance. I have nothing against them as individuals, but as an institution, they are totally out-dated and generally not a good thing.

Plus, I'm sick of constantly having to hear about people who:

  • I don't know personally

  • Aren't important politically

  • Have no real talents (except Meghan Markle who actually had a job)

  • Are praised for doing 'so much' for charity - they're paid by the f**king state!!! This is literally the least amount they can do for the level of privilege they have in this country.

  • Get applauded for doing something like naming their freaking child - most people name their children. It's not rocket science.

  • Wear clothes. Not even particularly special clothes. Just any clothes. At all. Surely it would be more of a story if they weren't wearing clothes?!

Can you understand what I'm saying my nerdlets? Are there people who you hear too much about on the news, online, etc? *coughs* Donald Trump *coughs* Talk to me! 😇😈💬

  1. I know this wasn't quite the entire point (although it was one of your points), but I don't know about the history, I just also don't care about the lives of random people I don't even know. I don't care about the lives of actors or musicians either. I might like what they do, I might laugh if I come across some funny anecdote about them or something, I might think something about them is interesting, but I don't *know* them, so I don't care to be bombarded with all the details of their lives or told that they wore clothes to the store. They're just people, the same as every other stranger I don't know. *shrugs*

    1. This was, essentially, my damned point! Lol XD Like, fine, whatever, let them live their lives - why in hell's name do I have to hear about it?!?!? Lol! XD

  2. My sister and I were just having this conversation yesterday! We were talking about how much North America is obsessed with the royals, whereas British people more see them as a waste on tax payers money. I personally adore Meghan Markle because I loved her as an actress and watched the show that she was on religiously, so I’m really happy that other people are getting hyped about her too. But I totally get the charity work thing. They really do the bare minimum because it’s expected of them, not because they want to do it.

    1. Yes!!!!!!! All the things!!!! XD And that's different - cos you were a fan of *hers* not a fan of the fact she's marrying a prince! Lol.

  3. Cee, I am glad you share a different perspective on the royal family. There is such an obsession with them and I went with it for some reason. Like, I lived in Egypt as a child and everyone was obsessed with Princess Diana (God rest her soul). As an adult, though, I find the interest in princes and princesses to be rooted in flawed assumptions about how wealth can affect a life. I don't know if the royal family would play a positive role in politics if they could. It feels like they are not really engaged in bettering the world or highlighting the voices of people unheard (like what you were saying about Welsh royalty and their demise). I do get sick of all the coverage of their lives in the media. But then again, I don't really understand celebrities being in tabloids either.

There is also this whole "OMG. You were chosen by a prince. How lucky are you" type of vibe that I truly despise. It is this unequal footing that royal couples' relationships are based on that bothers me, too. I remember this being a repeated theme with Princess Diana. Like, "Oh, look at these royals. They're normal people!" -__- Of course they're normal people. Why is that so surprising?

    1. D, I down right *adore* your comments!! XD

The role that they currently play in politics is to cosy up to Saudi princes, despite their questionable human rights records. Plus, when they were allowed to play politics, most of the time they f**ked it up - which is why they aren't allowed to now! Lol.

There's a big problem here at the moment with the 2nd Severn bridge (there are two bridges connecting South Wales and South England over the River Severn so that people don't have to go miles out of their way by land) having a proposition to be named after Prince Charles (who has the stolen title of Prince of Wales.) Hardly anyone here actually wants it, 'cos it feels like a slap in the damned face (especially since they want to use the Welsh - Tywysog - instead of Prince, and that is Llywellyn's title; Llywellyn, who they murdered and took the title from.)

I mean, I'm not as Welsh nationalist (different to normal nationalism - its more about independence) as the people who went on bombing campaigns ahead of Charles' investiture as Prince of Wales (I don't approve of bombing AT ALL, & the politics of nationalism gets messy quickly,) but the public weren't even *consulted* on this! Argh! Sorry. Rant over. Lol.

And like - yes! Of course they're normal! (Well, as normal as you can be when you live in a privileged bubble,) they didn't *earn* this position!

*face-palms* I'm totally seeing why you've gone to yell at birds or something.

  4. OH MY GOODNESS HALLEJUAH. You understand... Living in the UK while all this is going on is just insane. It's so hyped by everyone and it surprises me how America can even get almost as hyped as the Brits about it xD But I don't really care. I care more about the political side of things and world politics than the royal family >.>

  5. It always surprises me how much we see about the royals here in America. Why would we possibly care? But I suppose there are all sorts of people that are reported in the media about that I don't care about at all---every time a new baby name is announced, I just sort of shrug.

  6. I'm not a big fan of the royals either but I guess they draw in a lot of tourism. I like Harry the most out of all of them, he seems more down to earth. I feel sorry for Meghan and Catherine. It must be hard to be under such scrutiny all the time. You have to look and act up to a perfect ideal-like even after Catherine has just given birth the poor woman has to get dolled up and have her picture taken in a dress and high heels. Bet she just wanted to stay in her dressing gown and be left alone! I personally don't get the obsession that some people have. And how rude not to have the wedding on a week day-we could have got the day off work!

    1. If I were Meghan and/or Catherine - which is a terrifying proposition in itself - I'd be like, y'know what? I'ma faff around in my dressing-gown, and eff the press! Lol.

It just does my head in - I really don't care! XD
