Friday Fics Fix - After the Storm

'“Errgh” Harry groaned, “Is there something wrong with me?”

“Yes, but it’s the same thing that’s wrong with all of us.”'

Ahhhh, how I love Hogwarts eighth-year fanfiction!

Because let's face it, I think that we'd all like to see the immediate aftermath of the Wizarding War, instead of just zooming straight to '20 years later.'

(...Or whatever length of time it was ...I honestly can't remember.)

Like, dude, you missed the hard bits! Recovery isn't something you just skip over!

Malfoy’s eyes flew open and his body jumped, instantly alert. His eyes darted to the exits: windows, doors and dark corners and seeing nothing, they landed back on Harry.

If you're a regular reader of these posts (and btw, I LOVE YOU!) then you might notice that this fic has a lot of the things I love in a Harry Potter fic.

#IRegretNothing.

What are these things? Here's a handy-dandy list, so you can see if it takes your fancy too:

  • Eighth year at Hogwarts

  • Drarry (Draco and Harry having something sexual and/or romantic going on)

  • Mental health problems as a result of trauma

  • Mental health problems not being hidden

  • Fellow students acting as a support network

  • Hermione dishing out mental health advice (albeit off-page here)

That said, there's a few things to be aware of when reading this fic. #StaySafeNerdlets

Firstly, this fic does, as mentioned, deal with mental health problems.

The author tags these as PTSD which is a fairly accurate assessment, but many symptoms will also relate to other problems such as Anxiety.

There's also a distinctive passage of dissociation, so be aware of that.

Also - and this is NOT the way I interpreted it, but I can see it as a possible interpretation - there could be a hint of co-dependency in Harry and Draco's relationship.

There's also a possible reading of this as the 'love cures mental illness' trope - again, I don't see it like this, I think it's handled quite well, but other people's opinions might be different.

This week's fic, dearest nerdlets, is:

The silence living inside of me by WinterTeaCupBook

    1. Eighth-year fanfiction is a *whole* thing! People take the (logical) view that the students would actually want to, y'know, *get their qualifications* and use that as the basis for so much fanfiction-y goodness! Lol.

  2. I wish there had been one more book, or even a short story, detailing what happened after the Wizarding War. Did everyone go back to school? What was life like for everyone after all the death and destruction? I think it would have been fun to read about instead of skipping to the next generation. What a fun idea!

    1. Yep, if there's a gap, fanfic authors will *always* fill it! (They'll also, 9 times out of 10, add gay sex, but that's ok too!)
