Friday Fics Fix - Needy Lesnicki: In the Wind and On the Run

'But the lies were out there, circulating, and were made into a movie, which is a really mixed blessing. Let’s pretend this narration is over the title crawl, and cut to our heroine...'

This week's fic is based on the amazing staple of Sapphic culture that is Jennifer's Body.

Jennifer's Body is a 2009 cult-classic unapologetically Queer horror film.

I love it, and, yes, I've rec'd fics on it before. Jennifer's Body fic authors write some interesting stuff!

This fic imagines an AU where the film Jennifer's Body is an adaptation of a true crime story

And Needy Lesnicki, still in the wind and on the run several years later, has seen the movie. She has some thoughts.

(Oh, and it should be obvious from the premise, but in case it's not: this fic is full of SPOILERS.)

(Fandom notes:

AU = Alternate Universe)

I found parts of this confusing - but in a mind-blown/mind-f**k kind of way 😅

I love it though - it makes you think, and f**ks with so much of the original film's symbolism and plot-points in a way that clearly still loves the source material.

There's also some social commentary - lurking beneath the surface.

...And you know I love me some fanfiction-based social commentary 😅

It has some stuff to say about the lengths that true crime devotees and culture takes the celebrity and even mysticism bestowed on infamous killers.

As a true crime fan that tries to stay on the less-exploitative side of the media I consume, I kinda love the way it's played with in this fic.

This fic does walk a fine-line with mental health issues though - especially in a kind of 'what is real?' 'is this woman hallucinating?' way.

So, while I freaking loved it - be careful. And it's entirely possible that you won't like the way it navigates those topics - and that's OK!

Content Warnings to be aware of:

- horror elements

- murder and violence

- cannibalism

- human sacrifice

- mental health problems (inc. is it supernatural or is it a hallucination? stuff)

- arson

- discussions of corpses, body-snatching, desecration of graves and bodies

...as always, I might've forgotten something, so please be careful!

This week's fic, then, is:

  1. I definitely do think that some true crime devotees lose major perspective. I've seen on tik tok serial killer colouring books, cook books, people becoming pen pals with random killers, etc. I'm happy to see that this fic addresses it.

    1. ...serial killer colouring books. Colouring books. Serial killer. Colouring books. Serial. Killer. Colouring. Books.

...I am both completely flabbergasted and sadly unsurprised. Humanity is weird.

In the world of the fic, we don't know if what we're reading is actually Needy's perspective, or a 'fan' pretending to be her, and it's actually pretty powerful.
