Friday Fics Fix - Bucky Can't Catch A Break

'Bucky turns back to the screen in front of him and can’t help his flinch as the bright light turns into what might as well be an ice pick to his brain.'
'Fics Fix!' with purple background and white lightning bolt shape

Bucky has had it!

I mean, it's one thing coming to terms with ex-assassin-ing, super-soldier-ing, and being in the actual goddamn future, but now there's all this psychic b*llsh** on top?!

Dude can't catch a break!

Honestly, this fic had me from the moment it described migraines and light-sensitivity in a punch-the-air accurate way.

(Like in the quote at the top of this post - I'm not lying when I tell you that I can't see the laptop screen properly sometimes during a migraine.)

But then it has all this other stuff going for it too!

Oh, and it's from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier/Marvel fandoms.

...I nearly forgot to mention that 😅

I do try not to assume you're all in my head and 100% know what I'm thinking when I start randomly rambling about specific characters, I promise!

So, the basic schtick here is that Bucky - oopsie! - develops psychic powers.

That plays hell with all of his senses and general neuro feedback from his super-prosthetic, resulting in migraines and other not-so-fun sense-based shenanigans.

On top of that, Sam, Bucky, and their newly-assembled Avengers team - Joaquin Torres, Yelena Belova, and Maria Hill - are trying to find out who's doing shady things with a dubious energy source.

...Not the greatest time to have to adapt to an entirely new way of experiencing the world.

The source of Bucky's powers here was actually really clever - and didn't feel forced, which is even more impressive.

(Torres and Yelena are great in this fic, btw.)

Bucky: That's not a thing. Sam: That's definitely a thing.

This is novel-length SamBucky (so I was pretty much obligated to read it, obviously!)

It also manages a cross-over with ABC Marvel show Cloak and Dagger, and also takes some canon from the Agent Carter TV show.

Cloak and Dagger wasn't widely available in the UK at the time it was first broadcast, and I haven't checked whether it's on Disney+ (it proabably is,) so I haven't seen it.

(Yet - who knows, one of these days it may break it's way to the top of the mountain of content I've yet to consume.)

And Agent Carter was a long time ago, so even that canon was a little fuzzy around the edges as far as my memory of it goes.

(Fandom notes:

SamBucky, also known as WinterFalcon, is a romantic and/or sexual relationship between Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.

Canon is the 'official' stuff in the books/TV show/film/whatever.)

But it all seemed to make sense to me even without the firm background of those shows.

But then, as I've mentioned before, as a comic book fan I'm used to picking up on the narrative and plot points as I go along - it's impossible to know all the, often bizarre, canon from the late 1930s and early 1940s onwards, and I've made my peace with that.

Those who aren't so used to picking up those details as you go along may struggle more.

It's generally well-written, really interesting, and generally awesome, tbh.

And it had enough angst for my emo gobin spaghetti brain 👍😅

Do you think that giving characters random new powers is a good plan for fanfic authors?

Or do you prefer when they stick to canon powers?

  1. Sounds cool that Maria and Yelena are in this fic! I love those two characters and would love for them to get more developed storylines in the future.

    1. They're both side-characters def. here - but it's always cool when they're included! I think Maria needs more time away from Nick Fury, because it's hard for her to establish herself as a character when Samuel L Jackson's on screen! Lol.
