Nerd Church - Can Books 'Talk' To Us?

Do you think that books can send us messages?

I've been re-reading Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl -

so that I can finally move on to the second book in the series with some sort of familiarity with these characters because my brain is swiss cheese

- and I'd forgotten that there was a scene, in the library, where the books are 'talking' to the main character.

Title: Can Books 'Talk' To Us? Background: open books and fairy lights on a bed

I don't mean like literally talking - albeit I figure audiobooks do that on a regular basis, so it wouldn't be that weird - I mean like, they're sending him messages by opening to certain pages etc.

This is a YA paranormal fantasy, so it's probably not that surprising.

But... do you think that books can do that (in a far more nebulous way,) in real life?

Steering far, far, away from religious texts - because I have no interest in having that conversation #SorryNotSorry - is it possible for books to send us messages?

There's a general, slightly vague, belief that's relatively common in bookish online spaces and places - that the 'right' book finds you at the right time.

My question is this: is it the universe (or deity/power of your choice,) that brings the books to us, or do we seek out and find the books that we most need, when we most need them?

Are we the power behind the books? Are we only hearing what we want to hear?

Or do books have a power all their own?

Me? I think it's a mix of the two.

I'm a big mood-reader, and there's many times I've decided against reading a book 'for now' just because I don't feel like it.

So I know that I am, at least in part, steering my reading to what I need to read, when I need to read it.

But my hippie upbringing can't help but feel that there is a unique force that occurs when words are woven, bound, printed, read aloud, passed from person to person - over and over again...

Living art, y'know? It breathes.

Which is one of the reasons I love fanfiction so much - but I'm gonna restrain myself from waxing lyrical on fanfic, or we'll be here all day.

Maybe this is all a bit woo-woo mysticky.

But... a lot of readers will get what I'm saying.

Books have... something... to them.

...don't they?

So... am I talking utter cr*p? Or do you get what I'm saying?

Does the right book find you? Or do you find it?
