It’s too hot to think.
It’s too hot to do anything except stare vacantly at my laptop for a while.
But I said there’d be a Nerd Church post… so now I have to write a Nerd Church post. (Good luck, dear readers…)
If you’ve followed my online chatterings for a while, you’ve probably heard me complain about hot weather on more than one occasion — and there’s a reason for that: I can’t function in the heat.
I just can’t.
I have about 6 half-written Nerd Church drafts that I just can’t figure out how to finish because my brain just doesn’t work — I can’t get the sentences to sentence, or the words to word.
(So yes, that’s why you’re getting one of my regular rants about the heat instead.)
It’s been over 30C on numerous occasions over the last few weeks.
I’m starting to consider 24C — the temperature at which my brain usually melts into a metaphorical puddle of goo — as not bad. That’s ridiculous. Just ridiculous.
I’m Welsh — we’re just not built for this kind of weather. Our national costume is layers of wool, m’k?
So yeah, I’ve melted. My brain’s melted. And I’ve become a grumpy little so-and-so who plans to marry our small air-con unit which we use sparingly because of the cost (and also it’s not very eco to be blasting the air-con all the time. Sadly.)
The heat always makes my mental health worse and this year is certainly no exception
— it’s so difficult to do any damned thing when the heat just saps all of your energy and thinking power, time and time again. And then makes you feel guilty about that.
It makes my Anxiety worse automatically (it’s normal to get stressed and grumpy in the heat, but when you have Anxiety to begin with it just amplifies everything,) and then all of that adds up to make my Depression worse.
If it’s hot where you are, dearest nerdlets, please take care.
Stay as cool as possible, hydrate, let things take longer, and try not to stress (key word: try.)
Nothing is worth damaging your health for — and when we’re getting freaking amber and red weather warnings, or however your country classifies these things, there’s a very real risk that your health will be damaged.
This is not normal.
Climate change is real, and it is here.
Nerd Church will be back on Sunday 9th August 2026 - hope to see you there!
