Friday Fics Fix - That Particular Soft-But-Warped Tone

'Edward froze, glancing to the corner Stede had gestured to and seeing nothing there. Stede clearly saw something though, because he kept glancing over there...'

Title: Fics Fix! Background: purple with white lightning bolt shape

I finally got around to watching Our Flag Means Death (OFMD) - it will come as zero surprise to most people that I utterly freaking ADORE it!

And what I do with things I adore, once I run out of canon material, is read fanfiction - let's be honest, I am nothing if not predictable. 😅

(Fandom notes:

Canon is the 'official' stuff in the book/film/TV series/whatever.)

For those who aren't aware of OFMD, you may know it by its other, unofficial, name - the Gay pirate show.

Because it is the Gay pirate show.

And it's not like a little bit Gay.

It's not like... what straight people think Gay people are like.

It's actually Gay, then, as opposed to Hollywood Gay (which ironically isn't that Gay.)

This is so much more than the crumbs we're used to being thrown from films and TV shows - this is actual, beautiful, Queer characters, portrayed as people who aren't defined entirely by their sexuality, but also it is most definitely a part of them - it's not denied, like you'd get in a lot of shows.

And I could go on and on about it, tbh.

There's so much going on here that I could fangirl for a long time, and become less and less coherent.

But then this blogpost would never get published. And we can't have that. 😉

So to anyone who hasn't seen it:

Gay pirates.

Taika Waititi as Blackbeard (which should be enough for anyone, tbh.)

Being yourself in a real way, rather than in a soundbite way.

Beautiful slow-burn romance.

...I honestly can't explain it better than that.

So, to the fanfiction!

What I love about this particular fic is that it very much carries the vibes of OFMD - that particular soft-but-warped tone which I love.

The fic author is also pretty damn good at getting the voices of the characters right - which is pretty impressive, tbh, because a lot of these characters are very distinctive in the way that they speak etc.

The basic gist here is that Stede Bonnet is being haunted - something which the show kind of dabbles in, and the fic author carries on with.

The fic itself is basically the crew and Blackbeard trying to figure out what is going on with him, in a way that just seems to fit, y'know?

I really enjoyed it, because I was totally in the mood for something which kept the same kind of vibes as the show.

...I need there to be more than 10 episodes of this show, tbh. And luckily there will be a series 2 (although, in the UK, we'll probably get it a lot later than they do in the US - as we did with series 1.)

Until then, this is the kind of fic I need to keep my OFMD needs happy! Lol.

A few Content Warnings for this one:

- hallucinations with a supernatural element

- ableist language ('crazy' etc.) used in relation to hallucinations etc.

- descriptions of blood, gore, injury

References to:

- murder

- general violence

This week's fic, then, is:

Ghosts on the Shore by CosmicoWritings

Have you seen OFMD?!

(Technical question: does anyone know how to centre an embed div in html that really does not want to be centred...?)

  1. I still need to watch this show! It gives me similar energy to What We Do in the Shadows, which is such an awesome show.

    1. It def. has a similar energy! But at the same time it's definitely its own thing, because the characters are entirely different from WWDITS :)
