Tell Me Something Tuesday is a meme-thingy where people answer a different question each Tuesday
- it's currently run/hosted by Roberta @ Offbeat YA, Berls at Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life, Jen at That's What I'm Talking About, Karen at For What It's Worth, and Linda at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell.
16th June — Have you ever been surprised by a book that you didn't expect to enjoy?
My initial answer to this was ‘oh yeah, totally, all the time’ — and then I tried to think of a concrete example and I was like, ‘uhhhh….’
Eventually, I decided to look back through my blogposts (…well, I searched my blog for the word ‘surprised’ not gonna lie — there are over 1.8k posts and over 11 years of history here on Dora Reads, and I’m not a patient person.)
Anywho, what popped up in my search was my review from 2017, way back when I used to write reviews, (and, even more surprisingly, write them regularly,) of The Idea of You by Amanda Prowse.
And I was like… yeah. That one was way out of my comfort zone.
For whatever reason, I was invited to review it. And, for whatever reason, I agreed to do so.
I genuinely don’t remember what my thought processes were — sometimes I do sh** on a whim, and it works out. This was, apparently, one of those times.
(Shout-out to 2017 Cee for doing whatever the f**k she wanted! Woo!)
The Idea of You sounds really grim on the surface of things — it’s essentially about miscarriage and the effects of that on mental health and relationships.
But… it wasn’t really grim, and it was really good. So good, in fact, that it led to me reading several other books by Amanda Prowse.
Good times all around! (Lol.)
