I’m Queer 365 days a year.
June is Pride month - the month where LGBTQ+ people celebrate and commemorate the Stonewall riots, as well as our right to exist and be the people we are.
(Here in the UK June is the month, but due to scheduling quirks, events pretty much take place all summer.)
I’m Queer.
I’ve never been to a pride event. I’ve never even been to a Gay bar.
But I’m still Queer. Every single day of the year.
And in my life I have seen tolerance and acceptance ebb and flow way too much to be complacent about it.
So what I want you to do this Pride month/season/whatever-frame-of-time-we’re-talking-about is this —
remember that Queer people are, first and foremost, people.
We’re people who are still going to exist on the 1st of July, the 1st of December, the 1st of January.
We’re still going to have rights under threat, even when June is over. (Especially Trans people — Trans people’s rights are under a lot of threat right now.)
We’re still going to have disproportionate amounts of mental health difficulties (caused, at least in part, by the way society has treated us,) even when the summer ends.
We’re still going to require you to support our fundamental rights, and not treat us like trash, when autumn rolls around, and then winter rolls around, and spring, and back to summer…
Our work, our lives, our words, our hopes, our dreams deserve the same respect and dignity that should be afforded to any and every human being.
Every single day of the year.
