I’m on a bit of a Kinks vibe at the moment.
(…No, not that type of kink — keep it clean, dearest nerdlets. I mean the legendary rock/pop 60s band, The Kinks.)
I love The Kinks — their music is beautiful and complex in a way that few non-classical composers can claim.
A few months ago I saw Sunny Afternoon — a musical about the band’s early years — in Cardiff, and I’ve been on a Kinks-vibe ever since.
(My auto-generated Spotify mixes are now very confused by the way — my tastes are so all over the place that they don’t know if I’m 17 or 70. Neither is true — or maybe both, who knows?
Either way Spotify keeps rec'ing such excellent combos as The Rolling Stones and Sabrina Carpenter, The Beatles and olivia rodrigo, The Monkees and TX2 *shrugs*)
A lot of their music is way, way too relevant to the 2020s — class differences, money troubles, and politicians being the worst are universal, it seems.
...Which is kinda depressing. (Oops.)
If you think you don’t know any Kinks songs, then you’re wrong, by the way — you do, you just don’t know that you do.
Check out You Really Got Me:
Lemme list a few more:
-
All Day and All of the Night (‘girl I want to be with you all of the time…’)
Sunny Afternoon
Waterloo Sunset
Lola
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
The Village Green Preservation Society
…There’s loads more. You’ve probably heard them. You just don’t realise that they’re by The Kinks!
The next Nerd Church will be October 4th 2026 - hope to see you there!

ReplyDeleteYou know what...you're right! The one above has even been used for...I'm not sure...a TV ad probably? here in Italy, at some point...
They're pretty proto-punk for a vintage rock band...😉
Yep - they rock, and their music is amazing! :)
DeleteThey were pretty ahead of their time too. There's still debates over the framing of Lola, but most people see it as highly Trans positive, especially given it was released in 1970.
I looked up the lyrics, and I agree. The protagonist definitely makes up his mind in the end...😉
DeleteLol, one band member - Dave Davies - is also Bi, and wore dresses on stage (and off) quite a lot.
