Nerd Church - If You Change Your Mind, You Know Where I Am

(Re: the title - yes, I spotted a chance to quote Panic! lyrics 😅)

Why are we, as hooman beans, so reluctant to change our minds?

Do we think there'll be some sort of moral judgement if we do?

Do we think we'll look bad or unintelligent?

sign post with signs pointing 'one way' and 'another way'

Because changing your mind isn't inherently a bad thing.

Of course, if you change your mind from 'don't shoot people' to 'shoot people,' then that's not good. Please don't do that.

But in a generic, non-life-threatening, sort of way, changing your mind is perfectly fine. Smart, even, in some circumstances.

That's the scientific way of thinking: you change your hypothesis in accordance with the new evidence.

(Occasionally, some of my father's science sticks in my brain. Which is a welcome change from the chanting and meditating. Urgh. Hippie cr*p.)

Which means that, instead of getting aggressively defensive -

(and yes, I know that's something of an oxymoron - a contradiction - but I stand by it,)

- we can just review our beliefs and behaviours, and adapt accordingly.

In theory, anyway.

Unfortunately most people have the gut-reaction of 'the best defence is a good offense,' and we end up with... *looks around at the world* ...the years 2016-2018.

Hopefully we can turn it around for 2019 - come on human race, we're rooting for ya! 😅

It would be better, I think, if people just took a moment to wonder why they get defensive instead of changing their minds.

Like, is it because you're scared of what people will think?

Is it because you want things to be one way when they're really another?

And if you examine everything and still come to the conclusion that you're right... then why would you need to be defensive?

If you're right, then the facts will speak for themselves, and you don't have to take an aggressive stance when defending them.

(Unless you're talking to a buttface - in which case, stay safe, but disregard what I just said.)

Of course, life is rarely that simple - there's probably a whole bunch of things that I haven't thought of.

And that's ok. I can be wrong. There's zero shame in that, dearest nerdlets.

We don't know everything, and neither do we have to. We can just change our opinions when we have better information.

That's what I think, anyway.

What do you think, dearest nerdlets?
Are we better off accepting changes of opinion?
Should we be less defensive?

  1. Ironically the first thing I thought of when I saw your post title was Abba’s Take a Chance on Me lol. “If you change your mind, I’m the first in line...” ANYWAYS, I definitely think we should better accept changes in opinion. People evolve once they are educated, and we should embrace when people look at all sides of a situation.

  2. Humans do seem to have a lot of trouble with changing our minds because it means admitting we were wrong. But that's how we grow! We realize something we did or said or thought was ok is actually not ok, and we improve ourselves :-)

  3. I think we need to take into account that what is right for us personally might not be right for everyone (or even anyone) else. Despite this Western ideal that we should all strive to accentuate our individuality - especially through our shopping choices!! - we are terrible at accepting other people's right to their individuality as well. It's like our society only allows us to be Different within ridiculously narrow parameters. And I don't understand the point of that.
