Nerd Church - Brexit and Hatred

I almost cried yesterday.

There was a pro-Brexit march outside parliament, and as I was watching the news, I saw a White Dragon flag go by.

I didn't know wtf it was at first - it looked like someone had poorly reconstructed a Welsh flag after having one described to them by someone who saw a picture of one twenty years ago.

A White Dragon. Facing the wrong way. On a red background.

Something about it made me uncomfortable from the start.

And then I looked it up.

And it tore at something in my soul.

Because it's a direct-counter to our beautiful, proud, strong, DDraig Goch (Red Dragon.)

There is a Welsh legend that the Red Dragon of the Welsh and the White Dragon of the English once fought, tearing the land apart, until Myrddin (Merlin) quietened them to sleep beneath the mountain, one day to rise and fight again.

The Red Dragon has been OUR symbol for centuries.

The White Dragon is a response. An Anglo-Saxon dragon.

The White Dragon is a motif used by Anglo-Saxon nationalists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis. It's anti-Celtic, and pro-English-nationalism.

In the course of my internet searchings (which I will NOT be linking here, I'd rather not spread that imagery and ideology,) I've seen it combined with actual Nazi swastikas.

(And, as an aside, if you ever use the perverted white-supremacist version of the Celtic Cross, I hope the souls of our long-departed warriors haunt you and your damaged soul for all time.)

It's not just the White Dragon - although, unless you're Welsh, I don't think you'll be able to understand how much that hurts - it's the general veneer of respectability that the unholy aspects of Brexit have granted to the far-right.

If you were at that march and have not explicitly denounced the views of (well-known British racist/hate-monger,) Tommy Robinson, and the far-right supporters present, then you are a part of the problem.

You can't claim to be perfectly reasonable if you stand with such creatures.

If you walk beside that filth and do not stand up and say 'NO!' then you are just as bad.

In the political melee that Brexit has become - and that's a whole other post that I really don't have the energy for; we are so f**ked - it's important that we don't let these views become acceptable, even slightly.

Hatred is not OK.

White supremacism is not OK.

Racism is not OK.

Bigotry is not OK.

Xenophobia is not OK.

NONE OF THIS IS OK!

...and I'll keep saying that until there's no reason for me to say it any more.

  3. It's exactly what you say about these views becoming acceptable that is so scary. Even the BBC casually mentioned Robinson's attendance as though his hate-inciting speeches are perfectly normal. I think the increasing media normalising of the far right is an attempt to make the harsh Tory social planning seem less outrageous. It's a frightening road to start down :-(
