Friday Fics Fix - Is This A Family Or A War-Zone?

'Maybe, if he ran for long enough, he would get so hopelessly lost that he couldn’t go back to his siblings if he tried. After all, every time Klaus returned home, thought that they might become a family, he only set himself up for rejection.'

Fanfiction is brave, it's bold, and it's not scared to tackle the tough subjects.

This Umbrella Academy fic is about Klaus (big surprise, lol) - who you may or may not realise is my total fave character, and a Queer Queen with mental health issues. (Basically: he rocks.)

This fic also really refuses to back down when it comes to the tough stuff!

So, before we go any further into this post, here's your content warnings for this fic:

- PTSD, inc. Anxiety and flashbacks (MAJOR warning)
- Veterans' mental health
- Combat/war zone
- References to drug/alcohol abuse
- References to torture
- Mental health stigma
- Eating issues
- Inference of passive suicidal thoughts
- Grief/bereavement
- Family issues*

*To be honest, anything involving The Umbrella Academy can be tagged 'family issues'!

With this particular fic, it does get heavy and detailed, especially with the PTSD, so pay attention to the warnings please!

Always stay safe dearest nerdlets!

Reading - especially, I've found, fanfiction, where all the emotions are right there on the goddamn surface! - can be exceptionally therapeutic, but you have to be careful and put your own mental health first.

This fic is... the more I read, the more impressed I am by it.

I must've read it two or three times all the way through - which is something I don't really do with fanfiction, to be honest - and skimmed through it more.

And I might read it again.

Five from Umbrella Academy: Save the world.
Via Giphy

Clearly, Five is talking about fanfiction here ;)

I mean, I liked it the first time I read it, but I just thought 'oh, this is a decent fic.'

But when I read it again... there's so much here.

So much about the relationships between the characters, about the way we as humans react to people and events, and about how family members deal with mental health problems.

I don't have PTSD, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but from my general knowledge of mental health and mental health issues, this fic gets it pretty right.

And the handling of the stigma - with Klaus' family assuming this is something he's caused himself and placing blame with him, before slowly starting to come around - is handled pretty damn well!

Oh, and a quick note before I give you the link: there's a butt-tonne of SPOILERS ok? Ok.

This week's fic, then, is:

  1. I feel like anytime I reread something, I always discover something new and change my opinion on it. I am experiencing that now more than ever with Twilight and The Hunger Games. I feel like The Hunger Games is a serious metaphor for a capitalist vs a communist governmental system that I never realized before!
