It's Thursday. Somehow it's still 2020. Let's get some comics-y
goodness!
Once again this week is only the 'Other Stuff' category - for which, as is
traditional, we will blame Loki.
Other Stuff
The CW (who make the awesome-sauce Arrowverse family of
superhero TV series)
have decided
they will be blocking any racist, sexist, homophobic, or Transphobic
comments made on their social media.
Which seems like a good move - the CW has a fair record on including diverse
characters and actors, and there're a small but very f**king loud contingent
of nerdboys (mostly boys, anywho,) who will hurl abuse at people just for
existing.
I know a lot of people will say 'but freedom of speech!' - but social media
platforms are run by private companies, my nerdlets.
It's like if you're screaming sh** in a restaurant - they're gonna throw you
out.

I absolutely the the CW is doing the right thing. People forget that the popular social media sites are run my private companies who can choose to run their business however they please. One of my favorite quotes it "The first amendment gives you the freedom of speech, but not from the consequences of that speech." You can say whatever you'd like, but a consequence may be that that comment gets deleted or gets your account banned.

Also, Americans tend to forget that not all countries have the same laws - so hate speech is technically banned under law in the UK, for example, although there's always a lot of argument over what counts in that, but we still allow freedom of expression under the European Commission of Human Rights (which is different to the EU.) This is what happens when people let me take A-level Law ;)
DeleteYay for the CW!!!! I am happy that I watch some of their shows now. It makes me feel good that I am supporting a network that is taking action. I understand freedom of speech, but if you're just being hateful, then anyone should also have the right to hold you accountable for that.
ReplyDeletePeople really don't seem to get that 'freedom of speech' is not the same as 'you can be a jerk with no repercussions'! Lol :)
