Comics Wrap-Up - They Treat Me Like If I Did Something Criminal

'Comics Wrap-Up' with lined-notebook-style background and speech bubbles containing heart symbols

It's Thursday, this is still Dora Reads, let's get some comics-y, superhero-y goodness!

Film Trailers

Trailer for The Batman!!!!

And this is still the version of Bruce who's been at the emo make-up box (presumably borrowed from Bucky Barnes circa The Winter Soldier) - which my li'l emo heart is more than happy with, ofc!

Also, looks like we're getting The Riddler and The Penguin - and I would like to point out that nothing can beat the Gotham TV show for either. Although Jim Carrey's Riddler is also, of course, iconic.

(Warning: MAJOR flashing images, general violence including gun violence and explosions)

dividing line

Some more li'l trailers for Marvel's The Eternals!

Including one with American Sign Language (ASL) because one of the characters, Makkari, is deaf and played by a deaf actress. 😊

(Warning: flashing images, general violence)

TV Trailers

In other Bat-news, there's a new Batwoman trailer!

And Alice is back! Hell yeah!

Like, Ryan's settling in really well as a character, but my faves are def. Alice and Mary. Especially Mary - it's under-appreciated how awesome she is!

(As I was writing this post, the news broke that Ruby Rose had made a whole slew of allegations about her time as Batwoman - more in the 'Other Stuff' category)

(Warning: flashing images, prison and insane asylum references, Ableist language (crazy, psycho, etc.))

dividing line
Argh! New Hawkeye trailer!!!!

And it looks like we are finally, finally, getting the goof-ball yet somehow bad-a** Clint from the comics! πŸ˜€

Can't wait! πŸ’–

(Warning: flashing images, general violence)

Films

'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox' cover with The Flash running from slightly alternative members of the Justice League
*

I recently watched the DC animated feature Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.*

It was pretty good, and I really enjoyed it. 😁

But I am concerned that the BFI (who provide age ratings for media in the UK,) only rated it as a 12.

- Like, I know the blood is animated, but that doesn't make any less, y'know graphic. And trust me, it was plenty graphic - plenty of gore and executions going on here! πŸ˜…

Just 'cos the blood's animated doesn't mean it doesn't count!

Other Stuff

[CW: abuse, employer negligence, sexual assault, serious injury]

Note: Ruby Rose is Non-Binary and uses She/They pronouns.

Ruby Rose has finally broken her silence on leaving Batwoman and Oh. My. God.

If even half of what she says is true -

and there's no reason to doubt her given the evidence she's provided, but those she accuses do, of course, have the right to defend themselves

- then people need to be held accountable for the negligence and abuse on that set.

And to give her, and some other people, some serious compensation. My God.

The main allegations seem to be:

  • She broke her neck during a stunt while filming, and had to have surgery to prevent paralysis. She was given 10 days after her surgery to return to work by executive Peter Roth, or the entire cast and crew would be fired and it would be 'her fault'

  • Peter Roth made female employees steam the crotch of his trousers - while he was wearing them (which, apart from the general horrific horribleness of that act, seems like something of a safety hazard.)

  • Peter Roth hired a Private Investigator to look into Ruby Rose, then fired said investigator when the info. wasn't what he wanted to hear

  • Actor Dougray Scott, who plays Rose's on-screen father, treated women deplorably on set, including an incident where he hurt a female stunt double

  • Many members of the crew and staff were injured - some in life-changing ways (third degree burns, paraplegia) - due to the negligence of the show-runners

  • The production continued into the start of the Covid lockdowns, beyond the point of safety for cast and crew

...There's more, but those are the main takeaways from what she's said.

I mean - this is awful. And she was supposedly the star - lord knows how they'd treat people with less clout.

dividing line

George Takei has once again proven he's a gift to humanity by responding to Dean Cain being Biphobic over current Superman, Jonathan Kent.

dividing line

The wonderful BiblioNyan recently reviewed graphic novel A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman and Rafael Albuquerque

And to end, as is traditional, on a note of shameless self-promotion:

You can check out my (in)accurate summary of Marvel's What If...? episode 9 (aka the finale) - What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath? on Medium here.

You can see my general thoughts on that episode on Medium here.

Or you can see all of that right here on Dora Reads in last week's Comics Wrap-Up post here.

What do you think of the new The Batman trailer?

Are you looking forward to Hawkeye?

  1. Poor Ruby Rose! When I read those allegations I was just horrified, these poor people who had to put up with this.

Also: I did not know there was a Deaf character in The Eternals. That is the first thing that's affirmatively made me want to watch it! Neat!

    1. I know! Warner Bros' reply to the allegations has been vague at best so far.

Yes, there is! There is also an explicitly Gay hero, and an on-screen M/M couple. And they've really pulled out the stops on the stars front - Kit Harrington, Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden... like, I know v. little about The Eternals, but Angelina Jolie is proof that goddesses walk among us ;)
