Friday Fics Fix - He's a Phantom!

'Most of the lesson was spent in silence, with the usual crash outside followed by Danny's hand shooting up and asking to go to the bathroom; reappearing later on when the ghost fight was over, claiming to have gotten stuck under some debris from the fight.'

I miss Danny Phantom.

I really hope that at least some of you have heard of, and/or watched this cartoon, because if not it's just an injustice!

(Also, it ended over a decade ago and I feel very old now.)

And a shout-out is due to the awesome Carrie @ Cat on the Bookshelf, who got me in a Danny Phantom mood!

For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, here's a brief description of the brilliantness that was Danny Phantom:

Danny Fenton's parents are essentially Ghostbusters - they're scientists with an obsession with ghost-hunting and are not taken seriously by the scientific community.

They make a portal through to the 'Ghost Zone' which their 14-year-old son, Danny, walks into, causing an accident which makes him half-ghost.

In his ghost form, he uses the name 'Danny Phantom' and fights the other ghosts who come through his parents' portal - a secret that's only known to his two closest friends.

Danny Fenton changing forms into Danny Phantom

How does someone become half-ghost instead of fully-dead? Never explained!

Apparently ...Ghost DNA ...ectoplasm ...molecules ...blah blah blah.

Because super-vagueness is apparently awesome. #DealWithIt.

Also, as explained in later super-vague episodes, there's a ghost who controls time, and also some ghosts have children together... just accept this and move on.

(Seriously, the rules of this world are never fully-defined.)

But somehow, this hyperactive blend of high-school and hauntings just works.

And dudes, my younger self LOVED the amount of angst!

Some of the stuff in this cartoon was mega-dark (offset by a lot of humour and general randomness,) but I loved every second of it!

And Danny's friend/will-they-won't-they-love-interest, Sam, was who I wanted to be when I grew up. Sam Manson is amazing!

'Danny didn't seem to have as much control over his ghost speak as others thought, though. At school, if he was called upon, there was a chance he'd accidentally answer in the strange language of the dead.

One time when it happened in biology class, Sam whacked him with her folder. "English, Danny."'

This week's fic is one of the type I love - it takes the ideas of the original media and explores them.

While pointing out the running jokes of the show -

(e.g. Danny taking way too many bathroom breaks, and no-one commenting on the similarity of the names Danny Fenton and Danny Phantom,)

- it also explores how Danny's life would actually play out.

It lets the ghost-half and the human-half of Danny bleed into each other.

...And I totally love it!

  2. You're welcome for the Danny Phantom fix. I'm alternating between Danny Phantom and Harry Potter fics this week.

Have you watched the Butch Hartman videos about the series? I've liked the couple where he draws their future selves.
