Comics Wrap-Up - With A Pad and A Pencil Sat By His Side

Comics Wrap-Up title image with manga-style woman handing her living-shadow a flower

It's Thursday, and somehow I end up talking more about DC than Marvel this week! 😯

Still, let's get some comics-y goodness! 😍

TV Trailers

A new trailer for The Flash dearest nerdlets!

...And I know I've mentioned it before, but sh** is going down in the Arrowverse this season!

(Warning: flashing images)

Other Stuff

Speaking of Arrowverse, check out last week's Friday Fics Fix which featured a fic about phobia and Oliver Queen. 😎

OK, so... it's time to talk about JOKER.

But first - I think we need to make sure we're in a calm place.

So here's a video of Alec Benjamin singing 'Jesus in L.A.'* for a guy dressed like Pennywise from IT:

...ah, that was nice. Everyone calm? Yeah? OK.

We can talk JOKER now.

So, in a nutshell:

JOKER is a film focussing on The Joker (y'know, from Batman.)

It looks like there's a bunch of violence and all that jazz in there, and there's also some potentially worrying sh** related to the potrayal of mental health problems and guns and general disturbing grittiness.

None of this is news.

These are the same concerns that have been raised about this film for a while now. And they're valid concerns.

The trailers glorify violence - it's likely the film does so too.

But now people have got... I'm going to go with 'heated.'

And no, I'm not talking about the people raising issues with the film.

I'm talking about the people reacting over-defensively to the people raising those concerns.

To paraphrase and compositely personify the two sides:

Person A:

I'm a little worried about the violence in this film and the way that it taps into and potentially legitimises violent means being used by members of the Far-Right, and other potentially violent extremist groups.

Person B:

CENSORSHIP! How could you think a film could make someone violent?! You SJW fool!

Person A:

What? No, I'm just concerned that given the ridiculously easy access to guns in the US, and the previous link of The Joker to a mass shooting...

Person B:

Oh, so now guns kill people!

Person A:

Well... yeah. That's literally their purpose.

Person B:

Not true! Anyway, what has that got to do with JOKER?

Person A:

*points at racist rant with threats of violence and a JOKER profile pic*

Person B:

Freedom of speech!

Person A:

...are you kidding?

Person B:

STFU! Freedom of speech!

Person A:

...I really wish you could detect irony.

What do I think?

What I've always thought - there's some potentially worrying stuff in the trailers. The film might be OK, it might not be.

I might end up watching it, I might not.

No-one is attempting censorship.

(If you need to go back and watch Alec Benjamin again, then I really don't blame you!)

And to end on some awesome-sauce news, Sony and Marvel came to a deal and Spider-Man is back in the MCU!

(I'm not gonna say I told you so, but I'm thinking it kinda loud.)

  1. I’m so happy Spidey is back in the MCU! Tom Holland’s Instagram post when he found out was hilarious.
