Nerd Church - Covid 19: Seriously, People? There's Still A Pandemic

(Warning: As you can probably tell from the title, this post discusses Coronavirus/Covid 19)

I swear to all that is, or may be, holy: VIRUSES DON'T GO AWAY JUST 'COS YOU GOT BORED.

Covid 19 is still a problem.

So people who are cramming their butts onto beaches? Or celebrating football wins? Or having massive brawls on the beach?

- What, exactly, is wrong with you?

Covid 19: Seriously, People? There's Still A Pandemic

I am so glad we've been moving a lot slower out of Lockdown in Wales, because from what we can see, the English have just given up on social distancing entirely.

No, we're not perfect (see aforementioned beach brawl, plus the tendency for teens to set fires is bad this year) but our death figures are going down and (fingers crossed) staying low.

Every death, of course,  is devastating. It's just that every death prevented is a cause for celebration.

(Quick positive note: my Problem Neighbours, who thought social distancing meant invite randomers to the house and going out every day HAVE MOVED OUT!!!!!! Woo!)

And in the US... just WTAF, tbh.

WTAF.

I honestly think your president couldn't care less if you all died - so long as he's ok.

I'm so sorry, American people, please stay as safe as you can.

So, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you all this dearest nerdlets, but hooman beans do best with repetition, so let me refresh your memories:

  • Stay Home when you can.

  • When you have to go out, try to stay local in order to not spread the virus to other areas.

    • Use some common sense (I know, for some people that's a concerningly big ask,) - don't go to places where there are likely to be a lot of people if you can avoid it.

  • Asymptomatic people - people who don't feel ill - CAN STILL SPREAD THE VIRUS.

  • Anyone can catch Covid 19, anyone can be badly affected by Covid 19, just because you're less likely to be badly affected doesn't mean you won't be badly affected.

  • Stay 2m/6ft from people outside your household when possible. If the law/guidelines in your country stipulates this distance, please follow it - otherwise aim for it, but be aware of your local guidelines.

    • Don't touch - make physical contact with - people from outside your household. A no-brainer, I know. But... people... *shrugs*

  • Wear masks or face coverings if and/or when appropriate.

    • Don't pull your mask down to talk - it defeats the purpose of wearing one.

    • Avoid touching your mask with your hands.

    • Make sure your mask covers BOTH your nose AND your mouth - it's not an either/or situation

  • Practice good hygiene - wash your hands a lot, and clean your home and surroundings routinely (esp. 'high traffic' areas like door handles and light switches.)

  • Use hand sanitiser where appropriate, to supplement hand-washing - NOT instead of hand-washing.

...sometimes I think I'd be good writing public health leaflets. But then I'd probably wanna slap people upside the head with them, and that wouldn't be great.

How are things going?
Is anyone else about ready to smack people upside the head with public health leaflets? (I'm joking - please don't assault people!)

  1. I agree with everything you've said here, Cee! While things are slowing down in Canada as well, people have taken it upon themselves to start going on and partying with friends, going to the beach, and gathering in large groups. I saw some people on Instagram held a prom since prom was cancelled. Are you kidding me?! It's very frustrating because sometimes it feels like me and my family are the only ones following the rules. I would very much read your public health leaflets, and probably would like to smack some people (ok, maybe just Trump) over the head with them.

    1. I know, right?! Like - *why* are people like this?! (And I would've loved an excuse to get out of going to my prom! Lol.)

Hehe, I will neither condone nor condemn slapping Donald Trump with public health leaflets. I think someone needs to metaphorically do so - cos he has no clue. No. Clue. *sighs*

  2. I’m glad your problem neighbors have moved out! It’s frustrating that so many people refuse to wear a mask. It’s not that hard. I went hiking today and pulled my mask up whenever I passed other people in the wilderness. About half the people I passed had masks, which is better than I expected for the wilderness.

    1. Yes! I'm so happy - it'd got to the point where my parents were like, 'if they don't move, maybe we should.' The new people seem much better, fingers crossed!

Masks aren't mandatory here (Wales,) but that's because the First Minister (which is like the Welsh version of the Prime Minister,) has made it clear that he doesn't want to promote a false sense of security - i.e. people wearing masks but not taking any other measures. (Having seen how some people around here act when they're wearing masks, he has a point!) Plus he doesn't want a rush on masks from NHS (health service) suppliers, which could mean that the hospitals etc. can't get enough masks when they need them. So it's more of a gentle encouragement here as far as 'face coverings' go for the general public - in order to protect key workers and people in the health and care sectors.

It's quite impressive that people were bothering with them out in the middle of nowhere! :) All the pics we get of the US are... more like the pics of crowded beaches etc. we're getting from England.

  3. I hear you there. You'd think people would be used to following these rules by now.

    1. British people get worse at rules as we go along, tbh. *sighs*
