It's that time of the week dearest nerdlets! SUPERHERO TIME! ;)
Dora Reads is the book blog of a Bookish Rebel, supporting the Diversity Movement, bringing you Queer views and mental health advocacy, slipping in a lot of non-bookish content, and spreading reading to the goddamn world! :) (All posts may contain Amazon links, which are affiliate, unless marked otherwise. Nerd Church - The World's Exhausting Expectations of Women
Who the hell is it that's making 'the Social norms' anyway?
Cos I think we all need to have a few words with them.
I mean, the amount of stuff we're expected to be and not be doesn't make any goddamn sense. The 'shoulds' and 'shouldn'ts' are ridiculous.
(In a broad sense, I mean - I'm sure there's stuff you actually should do, like eat and sleep and go to the loo, and stuff you shouldn't like arson, theft, murder, voting for Donald Trump, etc.
There's exceptions to most generalisations.)
Women, for example, get a raw effing deal.
Just looking at ads and articles aimed at women can sometimes be goddamned exhausting!

Friday Fics Fix - Dream Girl, Outta This World
'Which reminded her, Kara and Alex were still there, and they were both trying very hard to pretend they weren’t watching the way that Nia was very clearly staring at Brainy.'
I love the Supergirl TV series.
I also absolutely adore the Supergirl characters, Brainy and Nia Nal.
And I ship the thing, SO HARD. Lol.
(Fangirling notes: I ship the thing = I support this romantic and/or sexual relationship)

Comics Wrap-Up - Stars Are On The Ground
If all goes as planned, then by the time you're reading this, I'll actually have watched Avengers: Endgame! Woo!
...That's if things go as planned though. Said plans have already fallen through a bunch of times, so honestly, anything could happen.
My town has no cinema, so even though it's not that far away to the nearest one, these things do have to have just a dash of thought put into them!
BUT regardless of whether I've seen Endgame or not, I have a bunch of superhero-y stuff for you today! Yay! 😊

Nerd Church - Game of Thrones: No-One's Very Happy, Which Means It's A Good Compromise
This post has Game of Thrones **spoilers** EVERY GOD-DAMN-WHERE! Ok? Ok.
It's best to get the spoiler warnings outta the way. 😉
Also, y'know this is Game of Thrones, so general WARNING for potentially distressing content.

Friday Fics Fix - In 2009, There Was a Girl Named Jennifer Check
'Because there is blood. And there is black stuff all over the floor.
And Jennifer is eyeing her like a dog does a bone, paws twitching and lips being licked.'
A decade ago, there was a film about two high school girls. And one of them ate boys.
And because it was unapologetically about Queer girls (this film is so Gay,) and because it was at least ten years ahead of its time, it was hated by critics and went unnoticed by the public for too long.
I've seen reviewers (mainly dudes, might I add,) talk sh** about it recently, of course, but the fact remains: this film is a f**king Queer Classic!

Comics Wrap-Up - She is the First Voice of the Last Ones in the Line
Nope, still haven't seen Endgame. #PleaseDon'tSpoilTheEndgame (Please and thank you!)
We got plenty of other superheroes and comics-type stuff though dearest nerdlets!

Micropoetry - April 2019
All the Micropoetry I posted in April!
Yes, I realise it's almost the end of May. Time, life, and all that stuff kept getting in the way.
(I did not intend that to rhyme! Lol.)
So without fussing any further, here's April's Micropoetry:
(As always, the text of the poems is in the alt-text, with / marks showing line breaks, for those using screen readers.)

Nerd Church - Is This Dystopia?
(Warning: This post discusses the general state of the world. It covers topics including but NOT limited to: the far-right, general bigotry, rape, abortion, violence.)
The year is 2019.
In America, a reality TV star, and well-documented sexual predator* (by his own admission,) is enjoying his third year of power.
*(Warning: Link discusses rape and sexual assault)
Backed by the Russians, this son of a KKK supporter holds on despite numerous scandals and allegations.
In the South of the country, cisgender women and people with uteruses (uteri..? I can never figure out which one to use,) are subjugated when Alabama decides their bodies belong to the state, to the cisgender men who legislate there.
Alabama claims to be pro-life, and supports the death penalty. They cannot see the irony.
Arkansas makes steps in the same direction. (Warning: Link discusses rape.)
Across the country people who are different are made to feel afraid.
People's rights are slowly stripped away. People have no access to affordable healthcare. Life is a pre-existing condition.
And yet many cling on to their guns despite the graves of their children, thinking that a wall will somehow solve their problems.

Friday Fics Fix - What Is Dead May Never Die
'He does a lot of odd little things that Sansa suspects he isn’t even aware of anymore. Things that helped him get through another day, another hour, with Ramsay.'
Game of Thrones after many long, long years, is coming to an end.
We have one episode left - only one.
But if the Harry Potter fandom has taught us anything, it's that fanfiction will continue, long, long after the end of the series.

Nerd Church - The Writer Diaries: Patchwork Writing and Whatever Works For You
(Warning: this post discusses the everyday affects of Depression/Anxiety)
Some people are 'plotters,' some people are 'pantsers' - and I write in patchwork.
For those who don't know, writing fiction is generally split into two camps by the people who split things (whoever they are - I'm not sure anyone's ever met them) - plotting and pantsing.

THIS IS STILL AN ENDGAME SPOILER-FREE ZONE!!!
Please and thank you. #Don'tSpoilTheEndgame
But despair not! I have some ultra-interesting vids and links to fulfil all your superhero-nerd-itches! (Well... maybe not *all* of 'em - there's enough weird sh** on the Internet without me adding to it!)

Month in Review(s) - April 2019
April - well, April didn't have any work-related nose-bleeds, for a start!
Thanks to everyone for asking if I was ok, etc, last month - honestly I think you guys were a lot more worried about it than I was 😅
On the one hand, April had Easter and chocolate and spring flowers, and all that awesome stuff!
Y'know, lots of fun stuff to enjoy and smile about! 😊

Nerd Church - The 9 Most Annoying Things That Have Been Said To Me About Being A Second-Generation Vegetarian
I was raised Vegetarian.
So even as Vegetarianism and Veganism has become more main-stream, I've been sat here in a unique kind of space, that not many people get to see.
![]() |
| Image by nugroho dwi hartawan from Pixabay |
I've spent my entire life as a Vegetarian.
Which, especially when I was younger, before it became popular, did create some tensions... not least because nothing used to be labelled with a 'V' or whatever.

Friday Fics Fix - They Didn't Teach Us This At the Academy
"I swear, all the doors in this damn house are going to be destroyed by the end of tonight," Diego muttered.
Yes, we are Umbrella Academy-ing again dearest nerdlets!
(Not least because it's a safe place to hide from Endgame spoilers! Lol.)

Nerd Church - Hope Against Hatred
(Warning: this post discusses terrorism and hate crimes)
Is it me, or is the world in a free-fall of hate?
Between the Sri Lanka attacks, the murder of Lyra McKee, and the day-to-day hate crimes we see here, there, and everywhere, it can sometimes feel like there's no hope left.
There is. There is hope.
There will always be hope.

Friday Fics Fix - Friends Don't Let Friends Execute Other Friends
'...it started with a bandit, sword falling downwards towards Arthur’s exposed side.
It started with Merlin, leaping from behind a tree, hand outstretched, eyes gold, a wordless cry of fear on his tongue.
It started with a bandit flying through the air, and Arthur turning to Merlin with fear in his eyes.'
I love BBC's Merlin.
First, cos it's just generally awesome. Second, cos anything that continues to re-tell Celtic/Welsh mythology makes me happy! 😁

Nerd Church - Happy Easter (or, Let's Respect Each Other, Yeah?)
Happy Easter/Pasg Hapus dearest nerdlets!
![]() |
| Image by Couleur from Pixabay |
One of the most enduring symbols of Easter is eggs, dontcha think?
Chocolate eggs, painted eggs, eggs with chicks breaking out, eggs just randomly decorating everything!
But I've been noticing some egg-hate lately.
And I don't mean from Vegans - that's a whole different set of issues related to a different set of moral questions - nope, I mean from people who don't know much about history.

Friday Fics Fix - Easter in Haven
(Warning: discussions of chronic illness and ableism)
One of my favouritest TV shows of all time is Haven.
'Audrey and Nathan dashed into the Grey Gull, each imagining terrible scenarios. None of their fears involved Duke with a spatula in hand, staring at the bar.'
One of my favouritest TV shows of all time is Haven.
If you haven't heard of it, then I'm not angry, just disappointed (not in you - in Society in general! 😅)

Let's do this!

Micropoetry - February + March 2019
I have a challenge for you for this Micropoetry post, dearest nerdlets! 😉
See if you can figure out what type of music I was listening to with each of these (there's only two, so it's not too bad!)
(This is just for fun, obv.)
I'll give you a clue: I was either listening to rap, emo, heavy metal, or opera.

Nerd Church - Give Me Gareth Thomas Over Israel Folau, Any Day
Those of you in parts of the world where rugby isn't A Big Thing™ probably haven't heard about the current Israel-Folau-homophobia situation.
For those people, here's a quick summary:
- Israel Folau is a world-class Australian international rugby player
- He's been warned previously about his homophobic posts on social media
- He did it again
- It's likely he'll be dropped from the Australian national team just before the World Cup because they ain't putting up with that sh** any more
- An English rugby player, Billy Vunipola, has also stuck his oar in

Friday Fics Fix - Is This A Family Or A War-Zone?
'Maybe, if he ran for long enough, he would get so hopelessly lost that he couldn’t go back to his siblings if he tried. After all, every time Klaus returned home, thought that they might become a family, he only set himself up for rejection.'
Fanfiction is brave, it's bold, and it's not scared to tackle the tough subjects.
This Umbrella Academy fic is about Klaus (big surprise, lol) - who you may or may not realise is my total fave character, and a Queer Queen with mental health issues. (Basically: he rocks.)
This fic also really refuses to back down when it comes to the tough stuff!

Month In Review(s) - March 2019
March was blood, sweat, and tears.
...literally!
March was a month in which I worked my a** off (no change there then!) and learned that apparently when my body's decided I've worked too much, it gives me a spike of Anxiety and a nose-bleed.
I f**k you not.

Nerd Church - 4 Tips For Blogging When Busy
I've been super-busy lately, and I've just about managed to keep up with the blogging.
I haven't got everything done that I wanted to do, but I've kept it ticking over with my average of 3 posts a week, plus answering comments, blog-hopping, Twitter-ing, and all the hidden blog tasks like SEO and finding images for posts.
![]() |
| Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay |
Phew! When I put it that way, I wonder how I've been doing all this plus running my own business and dealing with regular life-stuff, but I have! (No wonder I've been so tired!)
Also there has been literal blood, sweat, and tears over the past month - I've come to the conclusion that I don't need to add to that with stress over blogging!

Friday Fics Fix - A Future?
'"Fine, fine," Granger said, starting to pace. "Only my boyfriend is a Neanderthal who won't look past the end of his nose."
"Ah, perfectly understandable then," Narcissa said kindly.'
It's time for some more from the king of all fandoms - Harry Potter.
Seriously, there would be soooo much less fan content in the world without Harry Potter! Lol.
We thank you, Potterheads, we thank you. 😉

Nerd Church - Brexit and Hatred
I almost cried yesterday.
![]() |
| Image by Republica from Pixabay |
There was a pro-Brexit march outside parliament, and as I was watching the news, I saw a White Dragon flag go by.
I didn't know wtf it was at first - it looked like someone had poorly reconstructed a Welsh flag after having one described to them by someone who saw a picture of one twenty years ago.
A White Dragon. Facing the wrong way. On a red background.

Friday Fics Fix - Mischief-Making
'Peter turned around and left the lab area in a calm and orderly fashion*.
*in this situation, calm and orderly means that Peter sprinted the f**k away from there, trying not to scream.
And he continued this way, all the way to the quarters where Loki was staying, slamming the door open to reveal Shuri painting Loki’s nails.'
I LOVE THIS FIC!
Argh, the realism of the surrealism of it all is just awesome! 😅

Nerd Church - The Dilemma of Morally Dubious Media (Ft. American Psycho, Game of Thrones and Harry Potter)
Warning: this post discusses morally dubious media, including but not limited to: rape, murder, incest, general violence.
![]() |
| Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay |
American Psycho is about a serial killer that takes pleasure in raping and killing women in the most horrible ways, and the narrative goes into gratuitous detail about it.
Do I have your attention? Buckle up, dearest nerdlets!
No matter what, there is always gonna be media - books, films, TV series, whatever - that is kinda dubious on the ol' morality front.
Is that ok? Is that something we should be consuming? Is that something that people should be creating?
And if it isn't, is that something that we should be supressing?
Should we be, to put it bluntly, censoring it?

Friday Fics Fix - Indulgent and Cute Spidey Sickfic, Because Why TF Not?
'Peter sat stiffly on the couch, unsure of what he was supposed to do. He was too hot (but he was shivering?) and his head ached so miserably he could barely think.'
Look, sometimes you just need something fluffy, k?
I don't have a lot of time to write this post this week on account of life, the universe, and everything, so this week's Friday Fics Fix is kind of thrown together on a wing and a prayer!
Sorry if it sounds a little rushed. It's cos it is. 😅

Nerd Church - New Zealand. What Can I Say?
New Zealand.
What can I say?
Nothing that can make this horrible terrorist attack better or more bearable.
Nothing that can bring back the beautiful people you lost.
All I can give you is my heart, which breaks for you.
All I can give you is my love, in the faint hopes that it will help in some tiny way to sooth what hatred has done.

Friday Fics Fix - Shelter From the Rain and Snow
'Diego can hear his own voice, somewhere between tired and terse, and he scrubs a hand over his eyes, feels the dryness of his palm catch on his stubble.'
I love this fic. It's excellent.
Like, dudes, this is good. Y'know?
I love it when fanfiction is well-written! 😃

Month in Review(s) - February 2019
February was... OK.
Look, I'd love to say it was great. But my Depression has been kind of up-and-down.
So I can't honestly call it 'great' - but 'ok' is fairly accurate.
I survived it. I even enjoyed some of it. So 'ok' is what I'm gonna call it.

Friday Fics Fix - Girls' World
'"Maybe it’s not—," Ava started. A cone of flame whirled through the air. "Okay, maybe it is Mick."'
On International Women's Day, I think it's only appropriate to feature a fic about two of my favourite Queer female characters!
(I realise the link is maybe a little tenuous. But I don't actually care. I'm going with it 😎)

Comics Wrap-Up - From the Fading Light I Fly
I don't know whether there's just a lot of superhero/comics stuff this week, or if I've just rambled on more than usual... maybe both! 😎

Nerd Church - Save the World
With the world the way it is (*looks out at trash fire and sighs*) the major issue our planet is facing is in danger of being pushed to the side-lines.
But we need to focus on climate change.
Because, contrary to what the loud handful of naysayers say, we are wrecking the planet.

Friday Fics Fix - Magical Matilda
'Her lips pursed into a nearly invisible line. “And I feel obligated to let you know that Wormwood is a Wizarding name, while Honey most certainly is not.”'
Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant Hapus/Happy St. David's Day!
St. David is the patron saint of Wales - he doesn't have as interesting a story as Santes Dwynwen, he basically faffed around founding churches and doing the odd miracle here and there - but it gives me an excuse for a Welsh connection to this post!
(And you probably know that any excuse to include Wales in a post is good enough for me!)
